About
Threads of Change is the Cultural Engagement Lab’s electoral campaign that unites diverse communities, including organizers, artists, and influencers, to foster dialogue and drive voter mobilization through creative expression. By using data storytelling and art, the campaign combats disinformation on key issues like health equity, immigration, and climate policy, particularly in underrepresented communities of color in swing states like Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. The goal is to empower these communities, advance narratives of collaboration, and shift the focus to cultural traditions as solutions for a more sustainable future.

Voter suppression can’t stop us! People power is alive and thriving in Georgia, and Black voter turnout is essential for equitable representation – especially in the face of gerrymandering and redlining that seek to silence our voices. In 2020, over 33% of presidential voters in Georgia were Black, showcasing the critical impact we can make when we stand together. Let’s continue to uplift our communities and ensure every voice is heard. Your vote is your power!

Dreams Deferred

Inflation is putting dreams on hold, making it harder for families to find stable, affordable housing. Access to affordable homes is essential for thriving communities of color where everyone has a chance to build a future. This is particularly relevant in counties in the Black Belt where policies are enacted that drive cost and displace families. Let’s vote for fair housing and keep dreams alive.

🏡📢 Housing inflation, combined with an unlivable minimum wage, is driving gentrification that displaces the most vulnerable among us—primarily low-income residents and people of color. This crisis isn’t just about housing; it’s a stark reflection of systemic inequality. We must vote for fair wages and affordable housing to protect historic counties in the Black Belt region, which inflation affects the most.

In North Carolina, like many other states, our reproductive rights are under attack. We deserve complete control over our bodies and our futures. No one should dictate what we do with our uteruses. We demand the right to choose by voting for safe access to abortion in the upcoming election.

Our future generations rely on us to protect the mothers bringing them into the world. In Arizona, the Indigenous maternal mortality rate increases, and accessibility to safe healthcare, wellness programs, and abortion are more important than ever. Vote for health for Indigenous and immigrant communities 🗳️
From the artist @girasol.del.sur
“This piece honors the sacred act of bringing life into the world, a testament to the resilience of those who have traversed mountains, crossed rivers, and shed their own blood to protect their families and nurture life rooted in love and peace.
Titled El Derecho a Vivir en Paz—The Right to Live in Peace—the work draws from the song of the same name by Chilean singer and political activist Víctor Jara, who was killed for his vision of a better world founded on human dignity. As a doula and birth worker, I felt this message deeply, especially while reflecting on the troubling reality that pregnancy-related deaths in Arizona have risen by 44%, with Indigenous women disproportionately affected.
The illustration depicts a pregnant brown woman sitting atop the U.S.-Mexico border wall at the Rio Grande. Their body disrupts the barbed wire, creating space for their pregnant body near waters that have nourished life and culture for time immemorial. It’s a moment of connection between the unborn and the timeless sound of the river—an act of reclamation, resistance, and ancestral continuity.”

Legalize access to healthcare in Arizona, where rising maternal mortality rates are affecting every demographic. As reproductive rights are stripped away from BIPOC communities, the health and lives of all women and birthing people are at greater risk. Let’s vote to protect healthcare for all. 🚨Proposition 139, the Right to Abortion Initiative, is on the ballot in Arizona this year. Voting YES supports providing the fundamental right to abortion.

At the crossroads of the medical system and family separation, BIPOC families in Arizona face disproportionate challenges. Limited access to healthcare, the stigma around substance use, and the criminalization of poverty create barriers that put birthing people and their children at risk. With few facilities offering support for mothers struggling with substance use, we must advocate for change. Support the Prenatal Substance Use Treatment and Privacy Act to ensure all families receive the care they deserve. Together, we can dismantle these inequities. #SupportBIPOCFamilies #HealthEquity #ThreadsofChange
